Morning, Folks.
It’s the final day of the first half of 2025 — so take more balanced steps for the rest of the year.

Why? Two scenarios: 👇
If you throw stones at Hasnat Abdullah, my guy’ll throw flowers and pull a hug. But try that with Asif Mahmud-that man even carrying gun-mag in airport.

You see, right? Yeah… welcome!

Yunus and Rubio’s 15-Minute Call | What’s Going On in Serbia?

☎️ Yunus and Rubio’s 15-Minute Call

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a quick 15-minute chat Monday night, focusing on stronger Indo-Pacific security and trade ties. They talked about trade deals, election plans, democratic reforms, and support for Rohingya refugees. Both are keen to sort out tariff issues fast to boost business. The call came just days after teams from both countries met in Washington to negotiate the tariffs, with the Trump administration slapping extra tariffs on Bangladeshi goods, threatening export competitiveness. Interim govt is navigating a tricky geopolitical landscape, balancing US interests with recent meetings involving China and Pakistan that raised eyebrows in Washington and New Delhi.

💸 National Board of Revenue fell short by a record Tk1 lakh crore in FY25, collecting Tk3.70 lakh crore against a revised target of Tk4.63 lakh crore, due to economic slowdown post-July uprising, low ADP implementation, and NBR officials’ protests(Withdrawn yesterday). Despite a slight 2% revenue growth, experts call the shortfall unexpectedly large, blaming unrealistic targets and political unrest. The government now aims for a 35% revenue growth in FY26, targeting Tk4.99 lakh crore.

🚀 Bd’s apparel exports to the US jumped to $7.34 billion in 2024, up 36% from $5.4 billion a decade ago, beating the US’s overall import growth, says a US report. Despite a COVID slump in 2020, Bangladesh bounced back with a 40% surge, shining bright in the US market, despite high tariffs and shipping costs being bumps.

What’s Going On in Serbia?

Thousands in Serbia hit the streets over the weekend, clashing with riot police in Belgrade as protests against President Aleksandar Vucic’s 12-year rule intensified. Sparked by a deadly rail station collapse that killed 16 blamed (Nov 2024) on corruption, demonstrators led by students, calling Vucic’s government “illegitimate” and demanding early elections, fair voting, and education reforms. Vucic, branding protesters “terrorists,” vows more arrests, with 38 already in custody.

This isn’t Serbia’s first rodeo—25 years ago, the Bulldozer Revolution ousted strongman Slobodan Milosevic after election fraud sparked mass unrest. Vucic, a populist with a tightening grip since 2014, faces accusations of authoritarianism and cozying up to Russia and China, despite Serbia’s EU ambitions. Unlike 2000, today’s protesters lack foreign backing but face a stronger state security machine.

What’s next? The student-led movement isn’t backing down, but Vucic’s hardline stance and ongoing arrests could force a temporary regroup. Experts predict the protests will persist, potentially at a high cost, as Serbia’s youth demand accountability.
