😬 Major Embarrassment for Bangladesh’s Interim Govt?

Source: Reuters.
Things didn’t go as planned for Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus during his UK trip. UK’s refusal to arrange a meeting between PM Keir Starmer and Bangladesh’s interim Chief Adviser has sparked backlash, with critics calling it a diplomatic snub. Despite Dhaka’s earlier optimism, the British side confirmed no talks would happen—leaving Yunus to settle for lower-profile meetings. CA also refused a meeting with Tulip Siddiq in London, calling her corruption case a “court matter".
Some Wins: UK froze £185 million (about Tk 2,700 crore) in assets linked to ex-minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury. That’s a win for the ACC’s corruption crackdown, which is now targeting big names from the Hasina era. Reports claim $234 billion was looted during her time in power. Yunus’s visit, aimed at recovering these funds, did yield a meeting with King Charles III (who gave him the Harmony Award) and talks with ministers like David Lammy on trade and corruption.
Will it work? 🤞 UK’s asset freezes are a step forward, yet legal battles could drag on for years.

😷 Mask up, people — Covid’s creeping back. 15 new cases were reported in a day, with 82 already logged this June — that’s over a third of the year’s total. Meanwhile, dengue’s still biting: 108 fresh cases, mostly outside the big cities. Barishal remains the hotspot with 89 new infections — no deaths, but 481 are still hospitalized.

💸 Remittance hits record highs, but bank deposits lag behind—an odd mismatch fueled by waning trust, rising hundi flows, and a growing preference for cash. In the first 11 months of FY25, remittances surged 27.5% year over year to $27.51B, but bank deposits grew just 4.35%, even slower than last year. Urban growth slowed, Islamic banks saw deposit declines, and a 10-day Eid break reignited demand for informal channels.
💰 In the first 11 months of FY 2024–25, Bd exported $44.95B worth of goods — up 10% Year-over-year, with 32 sectors (clothing, electronics, footwear, etc.) seeing growth. But exports of jute, leather, cement, and veggies slipped, and over 80% of total earnings came from just knit and woven garments.
