Good morning, people. So, the internet just got faster 🤞 — Starlink has officially beamed into BD, starting at Tk 4,200/month. Meanwhile, Spurs ended a 41-year European trophy drought by scraping past Manchester United in the Europa League final. And your favorite team “the BD Tigers” lost a T20 series to the UAE — helping them make history (part of history at least).

🚧 Another Day, Another Protest

May 21 brought more gridlock to Dhaka as BNP supporters rallied for Ishraq Hossain’s mayoral swearing-in, while the NCP protested at the Election Commission demanding reform. Add heavy rain to the mix, and much of the capital ground to a halt—again. Public services paused, traffic crawled, and daily life took a back seat. Just another day in Dhaka’s new normal.

This isn’t an isolated event. Since last July, protests have become the default political tool. Students, workers, civil servants—everyone’s in the streets. And the pattern is clear: block a road, make noise, get results. The interim Yunus government has rarely pushed back, setting a precedent that disruption beats dialogue.

But when streets become the main site of power, institutions rot. If every demand turns into a blockade, governance doesn’t just stall—it collapses. Protest may be loud, but without reform and leadership, it’s also dangerously hollow.

🚩 BNP’s Ishraque Hossain is demanding to be sworn in as mayor of Dhaka South and has vowed to keep up the sit-in at Kakrail with his supporters until it's done. He’s calling for the immediate resignation of advisers Asif Mahmud and Mahfuz Alam, accusing the government of interfering with the judiciary and Election Commission while protestors ramp up pressure ahead of today’s High Court verdict on the oath delay.

💸 Bangladesh Bank is set to release a redesigned series of banknotes ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, replacing political portraits with themes of heritage, youth, and culture. The new Tk 20 and Tk 50 notes will roll out by the end of May, while the Tk 1000 note—featuring Bangabhaban and the National Martyrs’ Memorial—debuts on June 2.

Facing mounting export losses, the BGMEA has urged Bangladesh's interim government to request a 3-month grace period from India to clear stuck shipments, halted since India’s May 17 curb on land port exports. The sudden move caught exporters off guard, triggering fears of financial fallout. With bilateral trade at $10.56B, Dhaka is pushing for dialogue—not retaliation—to ease tensions sparked after Bangladesh restricted yarn imports.

📢 Relief, not a corridor. Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman shut down speculation, saying there's been no discussion about granting Myanmar a corridor. The UN asked for limited access to send relief into war-hit Rakhine — not to move people. Dhaka considers it purely on humanitarian grounds, with Bangladesh keeping full control at the border.

🎖️ Pakistan has promoted Army Chief Asim Munir to field marshal, the country's highest military rank, in recognition of his leadership during a recent conflict with India. While the government praises the move as a symbol of strength, critics argue it may further entrench military dominance over civilian politics.

The UK has paused trade talks and imposed sanctions on Israeli settlers, while the EU is reviewing its association agreement with Israel over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Both moves signal mounting international pressure on Netanyahu’s government as aid remains blocked and starvation spreads.
